President Toledo, who I only knew for a week before he left the mission, often said: "O Livro de Mórmon define os eleitos." Here in Brasil, we talk a lot about "os eleitos," that is, "the elect." These are people who have truly been prepared by the Lord to receive the message we missionaries have for them. These people are real. This week we taught a man who was a referral from our bishop (referral! YES!!), and it was quickly obvious that he was one of these elect. "I have a lot of curiousity to get to know this book," he said, pointing to the Book of Mormon in our hands. "What is it, really? Who wrote it? Is it a summary of the Bible, or what? What's its purpose?" These questions are our favorite kinds. We happily explained, reading with him Mormon chapter 7, 1 Nephi chapter 6, and other testimonies of the Book of Mormon prophets. As we read, this man got more and more excited. "I'd always heard," he explained, "that you Mormons try to create a different Christ in your Mormon book than the Christ we have in the Bible. What I'm seeing here is exactly the opposite." YES! I'm always grateful for and amazed at the thrill of teaching people whose souls are hungering for the truth. I've taught a man who had already read the whole Book of Mormon and knew it was true before he met any missionary, and another who, when he received the book, said he wouldn't read it, he would eat it. (perfect 2 Nephi 32:3 moment). He raced home from work that night and bought new glasses so he could read with clarity. The Book of Mormon is a wonderful, incredible treasure. The more I read it, the more I love it and want to read it. It changes lives. I have seen the countenances of people change drastically within a week, thanks to a few minutes of daily reading. When people are reading the Book of Mormon and praying daily, their faces shine. I know that a book that makes such changes could not be written by a man alone. It was written by many men, ancient prophets chosen by God to record His word and to testify of Him. If you've never read it, read it. You will never regret doing so. If you've read it two dozen times, read it again. The Lord ALWAYS has more for us within these pages. I love the mission and I love you all. Sister Petty

  1. Okay, after a couple of weeks, we were missing Sis. Petty's emails . . . but after a month, we're downright worried. Any news? We really do love to hear from her.
