First transfer in Abrantes, last week, readysetbaptize!
This week, we saw lots of miracles. A miracle baptism -- this young man went to church on Sunday, was taught on Wednesday, received an answer to his prayer on Thursday, was taught once more on Friday, was interviewed on Saturday, and was baptized on Sunday! I still can hardly believe it happened. Funny moment: when we talked about how we have prophets today, he wanted to know the name of the current prophet. We told him - "Thomas S. Monson." The 19-yr-old youth responded, "Do you have this dude's Facebook??"
Through this young man, we met another elect, prepared soul. This one is a potter (!! he's also married and has a little daughter on the way!) and after a couple of minutes talking about pottery, he began to ask questions about the church. We answered his many many questions, and finally challenged him to baptism. He accepted, committing to pray to the Lord for an answer. "I definitely want to learn more," he said, "I'll go home and find this Book of Mormon on the internet to read and study." We smiled and told him he wouldn't have to do that, pulling a copy from our bag and handing to him.
The NEXT DAY, he ran into us at the same place with the book in hand (!!), and stopped to talk for a minute. "I didn't get much time to read last night. I only read until about page 10." We scraped our jaws off the ground and answered more of his questions. I've never met someone SO interested, that has such a good head on his shoulders, and is so willing to follow an answer from the Lord. He'll be a stake president in about 15, I can feel it.
He went to church on Sunday and liked it. On the phone yesterday: "I am reading and praying...and I'm getting answers."
Missionary work is the same as ever...but it's sure funny when Facebook and the internet creep in sometimes.
I know the Gospel is true. I know the missionary is the greatest work we can do, literally. If we want to fight for families, fight for life, fight for peace, fight against drugs or teen motherhood or anything-else-bad-in-world, missionary work is the greatest stand we can take.
So...open your mouth and share.
